Canadian Pacific (Canada, 1974) David Rimmer. 10 min color
This very pleasing project, one of Rimmer’s best known works, is another which plays with time, in a collection of shots taken from a restaurant window looking out towards a Canadian Pacific railroad, culled from a six-month period. Like Jack Chambers’ Circle, the emphasis is on the subtle changes, the small differences to the landscape (and the frame) seen within a few moments of running time. Watching Canadian Pacific and its almost monochromatic images has a calming, contemplative effect. It is a gentle film about the quiet power of time.
